It has a 5 speed high speed motor that features a built-in electronic smart chip that increases power to the cutting disc under heavy loads. As a result, the filter extracts more juice and can make an 8 ounce glass in just 5 seconds. The 3" feed tube allows for the easy and efficient processing of whole fruits and vegetables, without pre-cutting, slicing or peeling. It is uniquely positioned directly over the center of the cutting disc for better balance and consistent results. The 5 speed settings make the Ikon Juice Fountain the most versatile juice extractor available. The lower speeds are for softer fruits and leafy green vegetables. The higher speeds maximize extraction from dense foods such as apples and carrots.

Real User Review
We owned a refurbished Waring JEX328 juicer for about two years and my wife used it to make juice for our children and me almost every day. It held up fairly well and we paid almost nothing for it at the time (around 30 bucks, I think), but it finally cratered a couple of weeks ago. We debated for a while whether or not to replace it with Breville BJE510XL or the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Pro. We finally decided on this one because it had so many five star ratings and because Breville BJE510XL is an appliance we use so often, thus we thought Breville BJE510XL made sense to get the best one we could find, even with its steeper price. While I can't compare Breville BJE510XL to the Hamilton Beach model, I can compare Breville BJE510XL
to the Waring model, and Breville BJE510XL beats the Waring model hands down.

As soon as you unpack the Breville you know you have a top quality piece of equipment. It does an outstanding job at juice extraction (the pulp is dryer than what the Waring produced, and the Waring actually did pretty well) and the clean-up is far easier. When cleaning the Waring, you had pulp caked up within the Breville BJE510XL and Breville BJE510XL was a pain to clean it out, partially becaused Breville BJE510XL
had a higher moisture content but also simply because of all of the nooks and crannies in this catchment section of the juicer. Although this section detached, Breville BJE510XL was still difficult to clean nonetheless . The Breville puts the pulp in a separate container off to the side, and as others have mentioned, if you line Breville BJE510XL with a plastic bag there is nothing to it. The only "pain" is cleaing the filter device, which is going to be difficult with any juicer you buy. The brush they provide does make this a little easier, however.

Now for the biggest difference: the noise produced when the machine is turned on. With the Waring, you had to pause the television, stop talking, cover your ears, and hope the neighbors didn't phone the cops on you for disturbing the peace. The Breville BJE510XL is FAR quieter. Don't get me wrong, Breville BJE510XL is not "whisper quiet" or anything like that, but Breville BJE510XL probably makes one third of the noise the Waring did.

Is it worth the higher price as compared to the Waring or Hamilton Beach? Hard to say. Like I mentioned, we got the Waring for practically nothing and Breville BJE510XL was a good introductory machine for us for juicing, but SO LOUD!

I can't really find any flaws with the Breville BJE510XL at all (we have run Breville BJE510XL for about a week now). Considering, however, that Breville BJE510XL costs almost three times what you can get the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Pro for (I would chose this one over the Waring purely from my experience with it and from reading the reviews for the Hamilton), whether or not you want to go with this "ultra juicer" version boils down to sheer personal preference. How often you will run Breville BJE510XL and what variety of recipies you might want to put through it should probably be your driving factors, along side the price difference, of course. The main differences I found with the Breville BJE510XL as compared to the Hamilton were a slightly higher wattage (900 versus 800) and the variable speeds instead of only one, single speed. From our perspective, though, we have had no regrets in spending the extra cash for Breville BJE510XL.

EDIT 08/05/08: Just thought I would mention that since this review we bought the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Pro as a gift for my wife's mother, so we had a chance to directly compare it to the Breville BJE510XL. It did a good job, but it was louder and not nearly as solidly built as the Breville BJE510XL. After this comparision, we are even more satisfied with our decision to spend a bit extra and get this model. The varible speed on the Breville BJE510XL is something you will definitely miss should you go back to a model that does not have this feature. Hope this helps!

By MW (Miramar, Florida United States) - See all my reviews

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)

Editor choice : Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor

See More Reviews and Check lowest price !

This juicer made me a juicing fanatic!!!!!!!!!,Breville BJE510XL

I have been shopping with amazon for years and have never felt compelled to give a product review until now -- I loooooove this juicer!!!!!! It is so easy to use and the clean-up is a breeze -- I refuse to hand-wash and the pieces easily come apart and clean up perfectly in the dishwasher -- you just have to give them a quick rinse right after using -- no problem! I already have used up almost all of the produce I bought to juice in a couple days of use -- and have already started making my own blends -- can't believe it -- this machine is worth every penny! I highly recommend doing blends of vegetable along with fruits to juice to up the nutritional content and cut the calories -- and a great addition to a morning juice (or any other time you want a pick me up) is fresh gingerroot -- it invigorates your whole system! I tried a blend of 4 carrots, 2 honeydew melon wedges, 1 orange, a small bunch of parsley, a couple small knobs of ginger,a cucumber, and 1/2 lemon -- made two glasses of excellent juice! My husband, who suffers from asthma and allergies, felt totally cleared up after drinking this blend -- is bracing but makes you feel awesome! Go out and buy this one -- can't recommend it more highly!!!!!!!!

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

GOOD JUICER,Breville BJE510XL

I really like this Juicer. I have had mine now for over two years and it has been wonderful. At the time I was a beginner at juicing, but now I have a little more time under my belt. This model has worked great with no problems what soever. I got my sister one of these just after I got mine because I loved it so much. She and her husband love theirs too. I also talked my brother into getting one (the same model) and he enjoys his also. The clean up was a big issue with them, so they had never wanted to be bothered with a juicer because of all the horror stories. You know, the mess, the noise. Once they got this juicer they were very happy and glad I talked them into this model (although I got my sister hers). We all love the easy clean up using the bags that we get from the store that the fruits and veggies come in from the produce section of the market (as a liner for the pulp basket) . I also gave them another tip on how they could just put the cutter (basket) back into the machine, put it back together, turn it on and let it spin dry for a few seconds after you clean it with the brush that comes with it. I suggest just cleaning with clear water after use if washing by hand because I notice that dish washing liquid leaves a haze after a short while. Mine still looks and runs like new after over two years. I am very happy with mine and would buy again. Clean up is a breeze and plenty of power too.
This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

love the juicer,Breville BJE510XL

Thank you to all who wrote a recommendation... I used your advice to buy this juice and after a couple of months of use... I still love my juicer! I juice carrots, apples, kiwi, kumquats, ginger, swiss chard stems... with ease.
I love the tips I got from other reviews so here are mine...
Tips:
- Using the brush, wash the front and back of mesh under running water to easily get the fiber out.
- Keep the juicer on the counter... so you'll use it
- For apples, use the brush too!! to get out the dust at stem
- Use a plastic vegetable bag from the grocery store to reduce cleaning time of the waste collector
- Place the Ikon on a silicone pad to reduce the vibration.
- Place a silicone pad under the juice catcher as well so the height is the same as the machine... or else a little juice will not dribble out of the catcher.
- Ginger with skin on is fantastic
- Swiss chard stems are great
- kumquats are refreshing... love the smell
- buy a little scrubber brush for the tube for easier cleaning
- Kiwis don't need to be pressed...
cool benefit...
My eyesight has greatly improved with the carrots I'm eating!
The industrial grade plastic does not turn color at all!
have fun!

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Good Product, Breville BJE510XL

Very good product. But it was worth the wait. I started juicing out of curiosity, now with the Breville you cannot stop juicing. First since I do my juice at 4:00 a.m. so that I can have it for post gym, I no longer have sleepy children wandering to the kitchen to see what the comotion is about. I love the variable speeds for the different types of vegetables and fruits, that you are reminded by the digital display what the speed refers to is excellent. I get much more juice now than I did from my old contraption. It assembles easily you don't have to pore through every page of the manual before you can start to use it, although I recommend you do. It is heavy and you risk loosing pieces if you don't store properly. But not to worry I created an entire shelf for this product, it is worth it.
This is now some 18 months after I bought my Juicer and not only am I still juicing but juicing more. I can now say that the juicer is aging well. Absolutely no problems with it, everything works well.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Yummy Juices - Easy Clean Up - Sleek Design Breville BJE510XL

I picked up the Breville Ikon 900-watt juicer about six weeks ago and I've never been happier with a household appliance in all my life. It's easy to use, quick to clean, and I've never been so excited to eat fruits and vegetables. The owners manual is written well and offers several juicing recipes to get you started right away. I was juicing my first items just a few minutes after opening the box. I doubled my overall energy in just a matter of a few days after I started juicing with the Breville Ikon. It's Perfect for guys (and gals) like me, who never make the time to eat the necessary amount of fruits and vegetables. Again, I just couldn't be happier with this machine. Happy Juicing!

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Absolutely love it! Breville BJE510XL

This is my second juicer, first one was by Waring and I remember it being very loud. I used it only couple of times and than got annoyed with it and it spent couple of years on my counter without being used at all. Than we had a fire and Waring was destroyed and I wasn't upset at all.
Now acupuncturist suggested for my sick daughter to drink fresh juices everyday. I was petrified. After a lot of research I decided to give Breville Ikon a try. It's been a week now and I absolutely love it! From the moment my 2.5 year old said "Mommy, juice!" to the moment when she actually was drinking fresh apple juice passed only about 1 minute. I keep all my fruits cleaned on the big dish on my counter, I just grabbed 3 small apples and voila! I have to admit that I didn't core them or anything, just threw them in whole - this was faster and easier, because my daughter could change her mind any minute. Now I' using it 4-5 times a day for the whole family and it's really an enjoyable experience. Cleaning is very easy and it looks just great. Don't look any further!
UPDATE 9/9/2008
1. I found that it's even easier to clean all plastic parts with the baby bottle brush that has a sponge on the tip.
2. I'm experimenting with new fruits and vegetables everyday and wanted to share couple of recipes that came out really tasty. I'm also experimenting with the vegetables that don't impact the taste too much, so my kids don't refuse it. So far these combinations were a huge hit amongst them:
Peach-Mango-Apple-Carrot+1 tsp of heavy cream for beta-carotene absorption
Apple-Sugar Plums-Strawberry-Pumpkin+ cream
Zucchini-apple-sweet potato+cream (you can spice it up with some cinnamon if you like)
I will add more recipes as I come up with them. Enjoy!
Ok, here's more:
I also tried pineapple - carrot - apple and pineapple makes a super delicious creamy juice
Also, I never could feed any kind of squash or pumpkin to my kids before, they just wouldn't it it. I decided to try and put a butternut squash into the juicer with apples and carrots and it tasted really great with a tiny beat of cream too. Kids really liked it.
UPDATE 11/16/08
This wonderful juicer works great on sprouts too. I juiced alfalfa and sweet pea sprouts on the lowest speed and got pretty good amount of juice out of them, more than I expected. I'm going to try juicing the wheat grass soon, I'm pretty sure it'll do fine, after it did so well with alfalfa which is very fine and doesn't look juicy at all.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bje510xl.blogspot.com/2011/10/absolutely-love-it-breville-bje510xl.html' title='Absolutely love it! Definitely consider these pro's & con's Breville BJE510XL

1 - Clean Up:
Pros:
Very easy... I rinse all the parts afterward with my sink's hand sprayer. *Hint: After I dry the parts & re-assemble the juicer, to prevent the metal basket from rusting (not sure if it would, but better safe than sorry!), I turn it on so that the metal basket spins, so as to make sure it is completely dry. Also, you can put a plastic bag in the waste bin so that when you're done juicing, you can just throw the pulp away & you don't have to clean the bucket out.
Cons:
None. Couldn't ask for easier clean up.
2 - Pulp
Pros:
The pulp is impressingly dry. It is much drier than the pulp from my original "Juiceman."
Cons:
I always find pieces of fruit in the pulp basket. i.e. When I juice a whole apple, I have found chunks of the apple in the waste bin. I also find stems & pieces of leaves from the parsley, kale, & other greens I juice. *Hint, After I juice everything, I stop the juicer, take out all the pulp from the machine & bin and run it through the juicer again.
3 - Overall performance of the machine
Pros:
- Small fruits (McIntosh apples, pears) can fit through the chute whole.
- The pitcher it comes with prevents juice from flying everywhere out of the spout. It also separates froth from the juice. Originally, when I looked at the pitcher, I thought "What a crock. They call this a froth separator?" But, it really does work! I can pour a clear glass of juice and the froth stays in the pitcher!
- The juicer is stainless steel with clear and black plastic. This means that you won't have a discoloration problem like with white plastic juicers.
Cons:
- The juicer sounds more powerful than it is. When I put a whole apple in the bin, I have to push VERY hard to get it to juice... seriously... I'm in my 20s and it's tough for me to push down! And this is when it's on the highest setting (#5). Once it breaks through the bottom of the apple & goes about halfway through it, it gets easier.
- The instruction book does not give concise directions about what speed to use for what type of fruit. It does not give you a setting reference for greens (basil, parsley, lettuce, etc.) and some of the setting recommendations they have are not consistent (i.e. juice speeds are listed on the basket itself, but do not match the recommended speeds in the instruction book.
- Some pulp finds its way into the juice sometimes. My pet peeve is drinking juice and then tasting a tiny mushy piece of pulp. This doesn't happen all of the time, but it does happen. I think this is because there is a tiny space in between the mesh basket & the plastic. And it is not because I juice so many things that it gets clogged. I only juice enough vegetables & fruits to make about 10 oz. juice.
- The juicer is loud. I think it's safe to say that all centrifugal juicers are loud, but it is something to note, especially if you live in a small apartment w/ roommates.
Conclusion:
This is a great juicer. It's on the expensive side and I do believe that there has got to be a better juicer out there that performs better. I do not think you will be disappointed that you purchased the juicer, just maybe wishing you tried something else. I am definitely keeping it for a year or so & am going to ask for a different one on my wedding registry!

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bje510xl.blogspot.com/2011/10/overall-definitely-consider-these-pro.html' title='Overall, A-... I spent many hours researching. I already own a juiceman and can tell you that the Breville is a much better product. Sorry Jack Lalaine. His is ok but there were a few things that bugged me about the juiceman. A couple were obvious right away and then others after I got the Breville. First, the pulp on the juiceman tends to shoot out over the top of the container spraying bits of fruits and veggies all over the place. Even when the container is not full. I would have to put a wet paper towel over the top to prevent this. Juice also sprays out of the spout on its way to your glass. I guess both are caused by the air forced out by the spinning of the motor. Its not a huge deal but cleaning both the juicer and my kitchen everytime I juice is kind of a pain in the butt. The juiceman claims that their pulp is the most dry but I have to say that the Breville pulp is more dry meaning more juice in your glass. I love the fact that you can use different speeds for different hardness of fruits and veggies. The motor is more powerful on the Breville. I also like the power cord. It has a hole to put your finger through where you pull it out of the socket. Never seen that before and its pretty neat. As far as cleaning everything, they are pretty much the same as far as parts go. They both have about 5 parts to wash but the breville has the screen and the blade combined into one piece. It also just pulls up out of the juicer rather than having to use a tool everytime as with the Juiceman. The Breville comes with a pretty cool recipe book that gives you a fruit and veggie guide. Everything you need to know about your favorite healthy F & V. Anyway, I am really happy with my Breville variable speed juice extractor. Hope this helps you in your search for the best juicer. My favorite raw veggie juice is carrot(4), tomato(1), beet(1/2), Broccoli(1/2 cup), lime(1/2), ginger(1/2 inch), apple(1) to sweeten. Enjoy!!!

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Perfect Breville BJE510XL

The Perfect Juicer
I spent weeks researching Juicers and reading reviews before making this decision.
I'm a first time juicer and I've been juicing only 4 days now, 3 times a day.
What a pleasure.
I can juice hard fruits and veggies like Pineapple with the skin, whole apples, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets etc. as well as the soft like grapes, peeled oranges, berries and leafy greens too.
Clean up is a breeze, no problems, fast and easy.
A few minutes of simple dissasembly and rinse out in the sink.
I don't even bother putting it in the dishwasher it is so fast and easy and I use it so often throughout my day.
I was worried over some of the bad reviews I have read about this and many other juicers.
I think if you are undecided, forget the whiney people who aren't happy unless they can find a minor fault and blow it out of proportion.
Some people just like to write reviews to complain.
Others, you can tell the ones, are sincere and trying to help and have good input but don't let yourself get caught up in the over abundance of information either.
Realistically, this is a great product.
This is my first juicer so I have nothing by which to compare it.
I may have been able to save some money and get a less expensive model but I am VERY happy with this purchase and glad I made it.
Dry pulp, large quantity of juice per item juiced (I was surprised at the amount), handy pitcher with measure and froth skimmer (for those picky people who don't like juice froth), no drip nozzle if you don't want to use the pitcher (I use the pitcher to avoid sprayover in a glass as juice comes out fast and the breeze can spray juice on to the counter).
Fast delivery through Amazon, great customer service and an overall wonderful experience.
I look forward to juicing continuously in the future and will let you know if there are any long term juicing machine problems others have encountered.
I wanted everything - biggest nutritional benefits, easy cleanup, versatility, style and speed. Unfortunately I was asking a bit much. The best nutritional benefits come from a double masticating juicer (ridiculously more expensive than a single) and both took a very long time to make great juice. As much as I like the idea of being a super health nut, I could not see myself honestly devoting 30 minutes to a glass of juice daily. I'm the kind of person who thinks twice before stuffing the stand mixer or the food processor and I didn't want to debate whether or not it was worth it to wake up earlier for juice. So, I sacrificed a little bit of the nutrition for the speed, ease, style and cleanup. I truly believe it was worth it. I drink juice all the time (and waited a couple months before writing this to make sure it wasn't too much of a fad).
The cleanup is no worse than the food processor and the speed... well, there is no comparison with the masticating machine. I am not able to make wheat grass juice as I would with the Omega, but then... I don't even grow wheat grass. This juicer gets rave reviews from me for practicality. Plus, it's stylish enough to leave on the counter all the time. Again, I really cannot express my joy with the speed and ease of this one. It requires such minimal prepping.
A bonus about this particular juicer among the breville line is that it have 5-6 speed settings -- more than the others -- which helps tailor the juicing process to different textures of fruit and vegetables so that you get the most juice. The pulp is not super dry, but I like to reuse mine (fruit pulp in breads, cookies, and boiled down to fruit butters; veg pulp in soups and dips; plus the dogs love it as a fiber supplement to their meals) so I don't mind a little moisture. Plus, you can always run the pulp through it again.
Overall, if your juicing fears include it becoming a dusty peice of clutter in the back of a cabinet due to sparse usage, then this is the one to try. You really can drop whole med-small sized apples or a quarter of a pineapple right in. Then either hand wash four pieces or put them in the top rack of the dishwasher. Easy-peasy.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Love it! Breville BJE510XL

I bought this juicer last week based on the positive reviews here. I absolutely love my juicer. It is easy to clean and its very quiet. And I love the fact that I don't have to cut up small apples or lemons. It fits right into the chute. Don't hesitate - all the reviews are telling the truth. I have owned several juicers over the years - and this is, by far, the best! And it's beautiful.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bje510xl.blogspot.com/2011/09/love-it-breville-bje510xl.html' title='Love it! From the ACME and it's PIA paper filters to a Juiceman that finally died after many years of hard use. Right off the bat, this is one awesome machine. To wit:
1. VERY high quality construction. All the parts weigh (what seems like) double what my old Juiceman did. It is made from very thick acrylic (or maybe its polycarbonate, I dunno) which looks like it will hold up to years of hard use.
2. The areas that get "wet" are all very smooth with no little nooks and crannies for pulp to accumulate or hide in. Very well thought out design.
3. EXTREMELY easy to clean. I just take the parts and hose them off in the sink with my faucet sprayer. Then I take the supplied brush and scrub the screen on the basket. Maybe 3 minutes, tops. Took me far longer with my Juiceman. I spend more time cleaning my food processor after using it than this juicer.
4. NO BITS SPRAYING OUT THE CHUTE! That was the worst thing about my last juicer. This unit's bin fits snugly against the chute for ZERO chance of spraying pulp. Great design.
5. Love the pitcher that comes with it. I tried using my normal 20oz glass but the force of the air blowing out of the machine sprays juice all over the place. No problem, just use the supplied pitcher. No mess and it skims the foam (makes my wife happy, she hates foam).
6. PULP IS DRY! Well, it's not saw dust dry, but it's far dryer than my last Juiceman. I have to squeeze the pulp very hard in my hand to get any more juice out. BTW, my last Juiceman was the top of the line one when I bought it, not the crappy Juiceman II. Anyway, the Breville is much more efficient and the variable speed worked will on the kiwis I threw at it.
7. I juiced about 40oz with out stopping (except for emptying the pitcher) and had no problems. No clogging at all. I juiced kiwi, apples, beets, carrots, Brussels sprouts, bell peppers and parsley. All went through with flying colors and no clogs or slow downs.
I dunno what more to say. If you are looking for a juicer and can afford $170, buy it.
One Month Update (Dec 2009) :
Still think it's a great machine. I have used it every day to make 30-40oz of juice and not one problem. Nothing has slowed it down, clean up is still a snap. Someone commented on it making a lot of noise and vibrating. This is by far the quietest machine I've used and it has massive rubber feet on the bottom that keep it rock solid with zero vibration. I really like the "knife" in the bottom of the feed tube. It totally stops items from spinning in the tube. Great idea. So far, I can't think of anything they need to improve.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Good while it works Breville BJE510XL

I love the design of this juicer and the ease in assembly. I love that the feed tube is wide enough that you don't have to cut up apples and medium sized fruit. I like the different power settings so you can juice hard fruits and soft fruits at different speeds. Unfortunately, the machine stopped working after 3 juicings. The LCD lights came on but nothing happened when you pressed the on/off switch. I returned it to Amazon and got a refund. I have re-ordered it because I like the power and I hope that I just got a lemon the first time. I like being able to put a whole, unpeeled apple, pear, etc. into the feeding tube, pressing a button and having juice whoosh out. The product is well made and easy to clean too. If you are trying to add more fruits and veggies to your diet, you may find that having a juicer is a good alternative to wolfing down a pound of carrots a day . . . not that there's anything wrong with that! The product is big and does take up counterspace, so consider how much use you will get out of it before committing. But if you are in the market for a powerful machine, this is the baby for you.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Good Powerful Extraction Juicer but with fatal flaw.Breville BJE510XL

This juicer has a wide spout and powerful motor that makes it easy to juice. You can vary the motor speed so that softer fruits and vegetables juice more efficiently. And, hard vegetables such as carrots can juice several at a time easily (with less force than many other juicers).
However, there is a design flaw in this juicer that basically makes it more fragile than you would expect from its powerful motor.
Basically, and this is easy to do, the motor can be overloaded easily. This wouldn't be a problem if the juicer had a circuit breaker with a reset switch. If you overload the motor an internal fuse blows and you have to return the juicer to Breville to be repaired. There actually is a ciruit breaker type switch in the unit, which is reset by turning the on/off switch off and then on. But the fuse blows out very easily, in effect overriding the reset function.
How can you overload the motor? There are several ways. The manual says not to run the motor on high for more than a minute. You can force hard vegetables into the juicer slowing or stalling the motor. This is easy to do because the spout is so wide you could put a large piece of vegetable in all at once, perhaps without cutting (e.g. beets). The pulp output can become jammed up and you might not notice. This will strain the motor. The pulp output can jam up near the cutting wheel without the pulp container filling up. The cutting wheel screen unit can become clogged up. Low voltage at your home also can strain the motor.
I had them fix the unit and will just have to treat it very gently. Listen to the motor for a change in speed.
Note: I've had a less powerful Champion Juicer for over 25 years with no overload problem because it has a mechanical overload switch in it that protects the motor.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Good Investment - If you juice at least once a day....,Breville BJE510XL

One month using the product twice a day, so below are my inferences so far:
- Love the 5 different speed setting, specially for soft fruits such as strawberries which require slower rpm. Small observation: soft and small fruits will be triturated before you are able to properly cover the feed tube, so there is (usually) some splattering of fruit particles.
- Not as bulky as other juicers out in the market, and personally due to its attractive polished design I don't mind it at all sitting on the counter. Plus, for me it's not pragmatic to put away the 14-16 lbs machine after every use.
- Pulp waste is considerably dry (for a household juicer) - Softer fruits might not get completely ground, but instead spat to the waste bin in big pieces.
- It is not quiet - but in comparison with other juicer brands - it is tolerable. Watch out for a little trembling of your counter top and neighbors wondering why do you vacuum so often in your kitchen...
- As long as you clean the removable parts immediately after juicing stainer-prone fruits/vegetables such as beets or carrots, your machine will not be stained.
- The filter mesh is somewhat tedious to clean. The brush included with the juicer seems to be the most efficient tool to clean it. Be gentle when cleaning the mesh, I did bend mine a bit while cleaning it.
I am truly satisfied with my purchase and do recommend the product to anyone considering buying a juicer in this price range.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Best Juicer by Far!,Breville BJE510XL

Years ago, we had a Braun Juicer, and used it all the time. However, it took a lot of time to clean, and before long, the clips to hold the top on broke. No juicer for a few years. A few weeks ago, I bought the Breville 900-watt juicer. It is the best I have ever seen! Why? Two main reasons:
1. EASY to clean. Often I just rinse the parts in soap and hot water. Even the screen filter is easy to clean. Scrub with soap on the outside, and then on the inside, and rinse!
2. EASY to use. I've timed juicing my "rainbow" juice, and with all the veggies ready, it is about 10 minutes from starting juicing to finishing cleaning! I can handle that!
It is true that juicing can be expensive. I bought 25 pounds of carrots at the grocery store for $6.95, so that is a great deal. However, beets, kale, apples, tomatoes, etc. can add up. Be aware of this. To me it is worth it.
A good rainbow juice is energizing; beet juice really will give you a strong energy boost. Here is my recipe:
1 beet with all the greens
1 tomato
1 apple
several leaves each of kale, spinach, chard, or any other greens
1 stalk of celery (it is strong, so this is about all you want)
1/3 of a cucumber
1/2 of a bell pepper
piece of peeled lemon (if you have it)
couple small pieces of onion (if you have it)
You don't need to do any peeling; just make sure the veggies are clean.
Always follow softer veggies with hard veggies. For instance, put the tomatoes in, and follow immediately with a carrot. Rule of juicing: soft veggies first. the harder veggies help press the juice.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Pretty Piece of Junk, Save Your Money,Breville BJE510XL

It's pretty, it's quiet, it appears to be well-designed, but if you want juice, especially carrot juice, don't simply avoid this product, run for the hills if you see it coming! Unlike it's less expensive sibling, The Juice Fountain, which zips through carrots like a champ, this machine comes to a complete stop rather than juice whole carrots. To juice them, I have to cut them up in 2 inch pieces and even then it does a crappy job of juicing--the pulp container fills with chunks of carrots among the overly moist pulp. Though the Ikon juicer keeps running while juicing quartered apples, significant pressure is required to get the cutting blades to grate them and it leaves large chunks of apples in the pulp container. The speeds used are at recommended settings, though did experiment with other settings, all with the same awful results each time used, including first time out of the box. The multiple speed settings are basically an unnecessary novelty, by the way.
A call to Breville Customer Service was, well, fruitless. They told me chunks of apples in the pulp are normal for this unit and it was normal for the motor to slow down when juicing carrots. Slow down? How about stop? They had no answer and offered no resolution, other than a sorry and maybe you should warm up your carrots first or buy a more expensive machine. Went on to tell me that I needed a better model to juice carrots! Huh? A $200 juicer (their 2nd from the top of the line) can't juice carrots, leaves overly moist pulp and large chunks of fruit and vegetables... while it was excellent at extracting my money, it isn't worth a damn extracting juice. And the because the motor turns at such high rmps, it infuses a tremendous amount of air into the little juice it extracts, the juice is quickly oxidized, depleting the nutrients (the whole reason for juicing in the first place).
To summarize: If you want a gleaming piece of statuary that'll look good on your kitchen counter, by all means, buy this machine. But if functionality is important to you, if you want a machine that actually effectively extracts juice without creating additional labor and doesn't waste expensive produce, or if you want a company that will stand behind its products rather than tell you "not working at all is working properly", look elsewhere... even the Jack LaLane juicer does a better job. This unit will be off to a garage sale asap, though it would be better destined to a landfill. If zero or negative stars were an option, this machine would have gotten it.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

A month of health, Breville BJE510XL

Well, have had this Breville Multi-Speed IKON juicer for a month. It has taken me awhile to get to the point where I found a juicer I really liked, but this is the one. Very well built. Very powerful. Extremely easy to clean (all removable parts, of which there are only 5...one of which you don't need to clean if you use the bag your produce came in to line the pulp canister).
This is the juicer I expected all along. Originally, I had a Jack LaLane Power Juicer that I bought from one of those shopping channel infomercials. Without getting into too much detail, the motor was weak. It was hard to clean. And, it made a mess. I returned it.
FIguring I needed to spend more, and get a different type of juicer, I bought an OMEGA VRT 330 juicer. That one was almost 3X the price of the Jack Lalane's juicer.
In some respects, it was well built. In others (like the mesh grill) it was pretty dismal. the mesh grill lasted exactly one month before it cracked. Plus, there's a series of squeegies that wipes the mesh grill attached to a basket outside the mesh. I suspect at some point, probably fairly quickly if you use the juicer every day, that this basket and the squeegies wear out.
Additionally, it takes a lot longer to juice with the OMEGA that it does with the Breville IKON. Lastly, veggies with longish stems tend to get caught up wrapped around the auger, causing me to have to constantly "reverse" the motor to get it untangled. Not convenient.
The OMEGA went back.
Now, the Breville is very well made. The plastic parts are thick and of high quality. THe motor housing is heavy stainless steel. TO use it, you set the speed (low speeds for soft fruits and veggies...midspeeds for firmer fruits and veggies.....high speeds for hard fruits and veggies). Mostly, I throw the fruits and veggies in whole, using everything. For the bigger stuff (like whole pineapples) I cut them up.
It's not as loud as a coffee grinder, but it's not silent, either.
The pulp is not bone dry, but it isn't any more wet than I got from the OMEGA machine.
This is a fast machine. You can juice a whole medium apple in about 3 seconds. Same for a handful of spinach, or 2-3 whole carrots. I can get an 8 ounce glass of juice in around 15 seconds. Amazing.
I think there's only one juicer I'd consider better looking than the IKON, that one's the IKON's big brother, Juice Fountain Elite, which has a slightly more powerful motor (don't think I need that) and has only 2 speeds but is more expensive than the IKON.
Cleaning......
1. Grab the bag that you lined the pulp canister with, and throw it away.
2. Put the plunger in the dishwasher
3. Grab the plastic top, rinse it off on the inside. Put it in the dishwasher if you feel it's needed
4. Lift out the blade/screen. Rinse with warm, soapy water and brush with the included brush. Throw it in the dishwasher if you want.
It takes maybe a minute, literally, to clean.
In my opinion, this is bar none, the best juicer made.
This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Failed after 2.5 months.,Breville BJE510XL

The juicer is excellent when it's functional. I read the reviews on this and thought I'd give it a try and I'm so glad I did. I love the different speeds on this, and the handbook provided has a list of vegetables and at what speed to set the machine with each kind. That is very helpful. One of the biggest differences between this and my older machine is that I use a lot less vegetables to get the same amount of juice. I will have made up the difference in the cost of the machine in no time just off the money I'm saving on fruits and veggies...what a pleasant and unexpected surprise that was!

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

This juicer rocks!,Breville BJE510XL

After juicing with a used 30 year old Champion, I am delighted with the ease of the Breville. There's a lot to be said for the staying power of the Champion, but cleaning the strainer--even with filter papers--was very difficult. The feeding tube was also extremely small.
The Breville is a work of art sitting on my kitchen counter (and I'm picky enough to have an appliance garage to keep my counters uncluttered!). It is capable of juicing fruits on #1 speed, beet greens, chard and kale on #2 speed; something no other juicer can do with such efficiency. Then, rev it up to #3 for cucumbers, #5 for beets, and carrots. Finish with a few stalks of celery, and it has practically cleaned itself. Only, three pieces need rinsing (four if you count the plunger)and all can be put in the dishwasher. I line the catching basket with a plastic bag for ease of dumping in the compost bucket.
It also, comes with a very nice pitcher to catch the juice and allow mixing of the different layers.
Juicing every morning, now, is an absolute pleasure!

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Works well, not too noisy,Breville BJE510XL

I've used the new Breville juicer every day since the first day it arrived. I like to juice pretty much everything, including hard veggies like carrots and beets. It handles it all really well. The only issue I've come across that I could complain about "which isn't really a big issue" is that sometimes if you put too many large veggies in before pressing them down the chute they will jam.
Part of the design is to put a thin triangular piece of metal just above the spinning disk - most likely so when you plop a whole apple in it has something to stop the initial downward force. You'll notice when you juice a small apple, you have to press down to get that little piece of metal to penetrate the apple. Then it will grind on the disk after that point. It makes sense, but this seems to cause the jamming. At the same time it protects the disk.
So what I learned is you just have to go a little slower than you'd want sometimes. Cut your apples in quarters if they are large - and cut beets in half. Beets are too hard to get passed the triangular wedge. If you get the gigantic juicing carrots from your health food store, it helps to cut them in half length-wise as well. Otherwise if you put in two of them - the large ends of the carrot will get stuck.
Ok that said, those are not really problems. Those are the hardest veggies for any juicer to juice. So there is some cutting - but otherwise even large carrots juice extremely fast.
As for baby spinach, it will juice that, but no juicer except hand crank wheat grass juicers or others that use compression will not to a great job on very soft leafy veggies. I like to cut iceburg lettuce in 1/4's and that gets a ton of juice. The lettuce that has long leaves - you can snap the bottom part to create two halves. Then squeeze it in and press it down with the base facing up for the most juice.
Cucumbers juice amazingly fast and you get a ton of juice. Oranges also juice well, but it will be fairly frothy. So you may want to do it by hand.
Cleanup takes more time than the act of juicing. It's not too difficult, just make sure to use some warm water and the included brush. The worst offenders are the hard veggies like the carrots. It tends to clog the stainless mesh disk at the bottom. Over time and several washings it will clear up.
You can place plastic bags in the bin on the side, but I found if you use the thin bags that they offer to put your veggies in - the disk will try to suck it in. A typical wal-mart grocery bag which is a thicker plastic doesn't have the same problem.
Would I recommend this juicer? I would say yes. This is the quietest juicer I've tried so far and does a good job. After day-in-day-out use, it still works well for us.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

great for making apple and carrot jouice,Breville BJE510XL

I am going to share with you my experience using this juicer for about 2 weeks making apple, pear and carrot juice,
First of all the set up instructions are easy to follow and you just need to clean it before you use it. There are only 5 pieces which is removable and all can be put back with minimum effect. Only one metal piece must be aligned.
I bought this because I believe this is the newest model with 5 speeds. For me it turns out I only use the most powerful speed (5).
I follow the instruction for apple and pear and removed all the seed and keep the skin.
You must turn the motor on first before you put the fruit inside. I learn the best technique from other posters here. Put the pieces in and cover the mouth with your hand. Sometimes it will kick parts out very quickly. If it stops working by itself you will have to use the plastic push to slowly push the pieces into the blade. It is extremely fast. The best way to use it is to prepare all the pieces before you turn the machine on. Then grind it and get your juice. The machine overheats once after about 20 minutes of use. I have to cool it off for 15 minutes before it works again.
My machine has a small leak like some other poster said. I have to put a paper towel below the whole thing and to keep it clean.
The juice has a lot of foam and I have to use a filter to filter it before drinking. But it tasted extremely good. The carrot juice is much better than the most expensive one you can buy. I buy the carrot from costco for about 50 cents a pound and get about 7 oz of juice per lb.
The cleanup is what most people hate. All the parts are extremely easy to clean up except one. That is the blade with a filter. The filter is very fine and they provide a brush for you to clean. Here is my method. You must clean it within a few minutes after you finish using it. Assume you have not used it for more than 20 minutes. (I suggest you somewhat clean the filter a little bit for every 15 to 20 minutes use. You probably cannot use it for longer than that because the motor may overheat.) My best way is to quickly brush it in a big pot of warm water. Then soak and clean it with very hot water in a smaller pot. You must use the brush on both side of the filter and change water very often. Now I can clean it in about 3 minutes.
The noise level is not bad for me and it is just like a regular blender.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

The Last Juicer You'll Buy,Breville BJE510XL

I've been juicing since 1996 and this is the one and only juice machine to buy. I've owned them all. I've owned three Juiceman machines one Jack Lalanne and a Black and Decker. Compared to all others, the Breville is a marvel of juice engineering.
In juicing power is EVERYTHING!! Without a powerful motor you're going to spend three times the effort in turning things liquid. As far as power, believe it or not the Jack Lalanne machine is a joke. With it's 250 watt motor, it's a gutless wonder. Don't waste your money and especially your time with this machine. Even the Juiceman Jr. with 500 watts will run circles around Jack's whimpy juicer.
Juiceman machines are OK, but they're hard to keep clean. Over time stuff gets down into the motor assembly and starts to rot. GROSS! In addition, Juiceman plastic parts wear out and over time you wind up with shards of plastic in your juice when the veggie chute starts to hit the grinder. Not healthy!
Breville is the most thought out machine on the market. All the problems were solved here. One thing not shown is the large collection pitcher. The snout of the machine fits directly into a sealed pitcher so there's no juice flying around the kitchen. It's a snap to disassemble and clean, it's dishwasher safe (the parts clean like new in the washer), and there's no possible way for the motor compartment to ingest stuff.
But most of all, IT"S POWERFUL! When you start that 900 watt motor, baby the lights in your kitchen dim. It sounds like a jet engine starting, and there's a powerful blast of air coming out of the snout (which is why the sealed collection pitcher must be used).
Don't even think of a Black and Decker, it's a cruel joke.

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

juicing made easy,Breville BJE510XL

i recently started making juice from scratch by purchasing the breville ikon 900-w and was pleasurably surprised by the ease and power of this product. the product is very easy to use from removing the breville from the box to making your first refreshing glass of juice. i researched a few other juicers before purchasing the breville and after using the breville i can understand some of the critiques of the other juicers - for example, i saw the jack lalanne juicer in a store and the reviews stated it was to large, trust me, it is. also, i would strongly recommend you know what you would like to juice. the breville is great for juicing solid vegetables and fruits like carrots and apples but if you are going to do mainly soft fruits (oranges and grapes)i would go with a juicer vs a juice extractor like the breville. however, if you need a juice extractor the breville has the power (very important), ease, and appliance style.
the breville 900-w is very easy to clean - i make a pitcher of carrot, apple and sometime pear juice in the morning and it takes me approx 15 minutes from start to clean up for a full pitcher. the hardest thing to clean the the grinder screen what separates the juice from the fruit or vegetable.
lastly, the breville is very cool looking as a kitchen appliance. its sleek silver design will go well with your other appliances and has the wow factor. my juice extractor cost around $180 plus $5 for shipping and handling - i thought this was more than a fair price for what you get. i live in chicago and it was delivered in two days
if you choose the breville you will not be disappointed - happy juicing

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Finally this Breville BJE510XL got me on fruits and veggies!

The juicer is excellent! It definitely deserves a spot in my "Best investments" list. So far I have tried Oranges, carrots, celery, apples, and spinach. Makes great juice and there hardly anything left in the pulp. Spinach, however, does not get fully utilized (even after following their instruction to pack it between other fruit/veggies). I have had so much difficulty consuming fruits and veggies because of time, cutting and other things. With this juicer, I am done making, drinking and cleaning parts all under 10 minutes and I love it so much that I have not had a cup of coffee since I bought this juicer 4 days ago. Why to drink when much healthier alternative is available? Overall My family and I are very happy with this unit.

Finally this juicer got me on fruits and veggies!, February 14, 2008
By
DR (Simi Valley, US, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Time + Money + Breville = Great Juices

Time + Money + Breville BJE510XL = Great Juices

I have a young daughter and it was a desire to be a good parent that drove me to buy this juicer.

Why I bought a Juicer:
I have a young daughter and as a parent I want the absolute best for her. Looking through the supermarket looking for good juices for her I found so many interesting things:

a) Labels at the supermarkets are confusing: sometimes mango juice is 98% apple juice with 1% mango and has all kinds of things like sugar, corn syrup, stabilizers etc.
b) You have to be very careful and become knowledgeable on what "from concentrate," "not from concentrate," "pasteurized," "stabilized," "5% real juice," "10% real juice," "no sugar added," "etc," means.

After a couple of months of reading labels and books, I became a learned shopper for juices. I only buy 100% natural orange juice, not from concentrate, without additives etc. Beyond orange juice though, things become very complicated: Just try to find 100% mango juice with no sugar, high fructose corn syrup, stabilizers etc added to it ---- I found it pretty much impossible and you can't get watermelon juice, cantaloupe juice, guava juice (well really hard), strawberry juice etc -- and if you happen to find something decent it was probably packaged in South Africa and shipped here with no clear markings on when it was packaged.

So, in order to get my daughter a greater variety of juices...made from more than just orange juice in a 100% natural fashion drove me to buy a juicer.

Why I bought this Juicer:
I looked at so many juicers and the basic principle on 99% of them work in pretty much the same way:

a) you have a spinning cone shaped cup with a very fine mesh on the outside.
b) a blade at the bottom of the cone tears up the fruit
c) the centripetal force smashes the ground up material against the mesh sides -- juice flows through the wall of the strainer while the fibrous leftovers stay in the spinning mesh cup
d) the juice makes it through and dry fibers get pushed up due to the cone shape of the container and finally out of the top of the cup onto a receptacle on the side
e) Viola! -- Juice!....oh, and Messy leftovers!

Given that the basic principles are the same for most juicers, I started looking for a few things:

a) The best constructed product out there
b) Ease of cleaning
c) Versatility

-- Construction
This Breville product is indeed very durable. Its rock solid. I can't say enough about how tough this product is. Bear in mind there are quite a few plastic products on it which are crystal clear. Yes they could break but seems unlikely that they will unless I bang them against something pretty hard.

-- Ease of Cleaning
The clear pastic parts have a plus that it makes it easy to clean and see that everything is clean.

The mesh is much easier to clean than I thought

--Versatility
The motor has several speeds to help get the most juice out of different fruits. Speed is important. If the speed is too fast, juicy fruits will be spun out of the juicing cone leaving precious juice in the fibrous remains. So I really like the 5speed variable speed.

What I have found:
a) Juicing is Hard --
-- Depending on the fruit it can take a lot of fruit to make little juice
-- Cantalope, Watermelon make lots of juice from each
-- Oranges make medium amounts of juice from each
-- Pineapples, Mangos, Peachers make little juice from each
-- You have to prepare the fruits before you go down the road of juicing and this takes time
-- Once you have all of your ingredients prepared, its almost heartbreaking to see the Breville turn them into juice in about 30 seconds --- literally 30 minutes preparing fruits sometimes so that the juicer can crush them in 30 seconds and then to make half a pitcher that you drink in 3 minutes....hmmm

b) Juicing is Expensive
-- You have to buy fruits that are in season and cheap otherwise juicing is a prohibitively expensive proposition
-- No matter what type of fruit you use save watermelon and cantalope, it will always seem that you're throwing tons of fruit into the hungry beast to make very little juice.
-- It is amazing how much fruit this machine will consume and all that fruit is pricey
-- So, unless you're a millionaire and have all the time in the world, you're going to be relegated to making juice only from things that are in season.

c) Juicing is Great
-- Ok now you're probably saying, "oh, I don't know about this whole juicing thing after this crazy guy points out all the negatives." Not quite, there are a ton of positives to juicing.

The Opportunist Blender -- I'm blending all kinds of different fruits, especially all the marginal fruit in my refrigerator (I used to buy lots of fruit, and still do, and don't consume it all) As that fruit gets ripe and just before it goes to waste, before I would just throw it out, but now I just bring out my juicer and throw it all into the machine. It makes short work of blueberries, strawberries, all berries and then I throw in a few oranges (oranges have become my defacto base for my juices) and viola! I've saved my old fruits that would've gone to waste and I've created a healthy concoction that I could never get at the store....don't ask me to recreate it but all and I mean all my blends taste great with the Breville.

The Health Nut -- I make it a point to blend at least 1 to 2 times a week for my daughter and I absolutely know 100% that she's getting 100% fresh and pure juice and she loves the juices I make! She looks forward to juicing. She's 2 and she just sits there on a highchair while I juice -- such wonderful times.

Overall:
a) The Juicer has NOT replaced supermarket juices. I still buy 100%orange juice, not from concentrate
b) I don't buy other juices like mango juice etc
c) I still buy Motts for Tots kindof juices (go figure)
d) The Juicer has allowed me to supplement our diet with 100% natural juices a few times a week
e) The juicer has allowed me to use fruit that I would otherwise throw away.

What I Learned After Owning the Breville:
-- Juicing is not the glorious thing that its made out to be in the infomercials, its tedious, dirty, expensive, and you get little juice
-- Its very healthy and if you do it right (with in season, juicy fruits), you can make some wonderful and very healthy juices....You know exactly what you're putting into it
-- If you're going to buy a juicer, buy this a fantastic choice.

By
Just Anonymous (Georgia, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)

This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

Ikon: Almost perfect. Better than Elite

BJE510XL: Almost perfect. Better than Elite

I've had the opportunity to try both the Elite and the Breville BJE510XL. I much prefer the Ikon. I found the Elite unnecessarily large. Both have the same ample-sized 3" fruit and vegetable receptacle in width, but the Elite's "food pusher" and chute are longer than theBreville BJE510XL's, making the Elite more difficult to fit under an upper kitchen cabinet. The Elite looked too industrial and imposing on the counter. The Breville BJE510XL looks "just right," and the Ikon's additional speed controls are a great plus. Also, the Ikon's "safety locking arm" is easier to use, possibly because it's more substantial, and the "arm" is more attractive than the Elite's.

WORTH NOTING: I bought the Breville BJE510XL from Bed, Bath & Beyond. With their 20% off coupon, it was less expensive than Amazon's price and I didn't have to wait for Amazon to ship it to me. (I live close enough to BB&B to have been able to bring the juicer home in my shopping cart so no shipping charge was incurred -- both now charge sales tax, at least if bought in or sent to New York City so there was no saving for me if I bought from Amazon.) I returned the first Breville BJE510XL to BB&B for another because I sensed something was not totally right. Sure enough the second Breville BJE510XL felt and sounded perfect. (The pulp was definitely drier. I still sometimes run the pulp through a second time and the juice yield is greater. I just don't know if the additional amount is worth the effort.) I suspect variations of quality between the machines occurs frequently, so don't hesitate to make an exchange if you believe something is wrong. Amazon.com and BB&Beyond are very customer friendly so returning and/or exchanging was very easy.

WORTH NOTING #2: The reconditioned Breville BJE510XL I received from Amazon.com was in amazingly bad condition. (I think the former owner cleaned the plastic juicer cover with the cleaning brush that should be used only on the filter basket.) The plastic was so scratched that no part of it was clear. The machine should never have been sent to me. The good news is that Amazon.com took Breville BJE510XL back with only a few questions.) I have since learned that there's a link on the ordering page for juicers that are "reconditioned" that allows you to specify the condition of the reconditioned machine that you're willing to accept.

Thanks to the reviews I read on Amazon.com of others who experienced the juicers before me, I knew to use a plastic bag in the pulp container -- definitely a helpful hint. I think too much is made of the difficulty and time consumption involved in cleaning the Breville BJE510XL. The important part to clean ASAP is the stainless steel filter basket. I just fill the sink with warm, sudsy water and drop parts in to be cleaned when I'm ready. If the plastic does become stained by carrots, a little fresh lemon rubbed on the stain removes Breville BJE510XL.

Good luck on your choice.

Ikon: Almost perfect. I had been reading a lot of reviews online on various juicers and other Breville BJE510XL juicers had gotten high marks. This is a newer variable speed version, and that is a great feature. I have juiced carrots, parsnips, cabbage, celery, pears, tomatoes, and apples, and am amazed at how dry the pulp is when it comes out! The Breville BJE510XL is quiter than my blender, so the noise isn't a factor. Also, it takes me about 5 min to wash the 5 parts after juicing, since I don't have a dishwasher. I must also mention how beatiful and well crafted the juicer is, I have Breville BJE510XL sitting out on my counter along with my other stainless steel appliances and it looks great! I think Breville BJE510XL is the best you can get in this price range. All the reviews I read said it was easy to use and to clean up and they were correct. Breville BJE510XL is easy to take apart and put together, relatively compact - it takes less space on my counter than my food processor and I use it more - and makes great juice. Using a plastic bag to line the waste bin makes cleanup even easier. I have discovered that the chopper/screen mechanism needs to be rinsed if I am making a larger batch of juice. Strawberry seeds especially get caught by Breville BJE510XL and need to be rinsed away. Breville BJE510XL comes with a special brush to clean this part and is is quick and easy to take that part out, rinse and put it back in and continue juicing. If this isn't done, then the pulp in the waste bin has more moisture and juice is wasted.

The five speeds are great, so that oranges/strawberries/watermelon juice as a slower speed than carrots/apples/celery and the juice is effectively extracted. I am very happy and use my Breville BJE510XL every day for fabulous healthful drinks and I am no longer sending plastic bottles to the landfill from buying juice.

So please with my new juicer, May 17, 2008
By K. I used to own a more expensive juicer but cleaning it was such a pain I stopped juicing and gave it away. After doing tons of research I settled on the Ikon Juicer which is just perfect. My biggest concern was cleaning. It takes about 10-15 minutes to clean by hand but you can rinse the parts and just put it in the dishwasher. The pulp comes out dry so all the juice is extracted pretty much. I disagree with the complaint that people have that the juicer is too loud. It's not that bad actually. The Breville BJE510XL design is very cool looking compared to other juicers. I've used Breville BJE510XL for about 2 weeks and made a variety of juices and I see and feel the difference in myself. Lets face Breville BJE510XL, if you're single, cooking and cleaning are not at the top of your list. The Breville BJE510XL lets you get all the nutrients from fruits and vegetables in their purest form immediately without the headache of cooking and cleaning. The Breville BJE510XL belongs to a class of juicers called centrifugal juicers. These work by forcing the juicing item onto centrally located spinning blades that essentially finely grates Breville BJE510XL and then the contents are thrown outward onto a spinning screen (spinning at a thousand or more revolutions per minute)... Breville BJE510XL forces the juice through the screen while the pulp gets held back and eventually slides up the angled screen and gets thrown over the top and into a holding bin... and thus the juice is separated from the pulp Breville BJE510XL. The other types of juicers are the masticating juicer, where the Breville BJE510XL is literally crushed in an auger (a big screw) and compressed so that the juice flows through a small screen in the bottom while the pulp is pushed forward where Breville BJE510XL gets ejected at the far end... and the other type is the citrus juicer which is basically an electrically powered reamer used to semi-manually ream-out citrus fruits quickly. And finally Breville BJE510XL is the common kitchen blender.

Each type of juicer has it advantages and disadvantages... to be able to juice ALL types of vegetables and fruits well and efficiently you will actually need all four types of juicers. In reverse order...
Kitchen Blender: for very soft or delicate and highly pulpy fruits (raspberries, bananas, blueberries)
Citrus Juicer: for the ultimate in convenience, speed, ease and an excellent amount of juice extraction for all citrus fruits
Masticating Juicer: virtually the only type of juicer for leafy greens (however it will also perform well with any items that are not too soft and pulpy, as the small screen plugs up too easily), however be warned, the juice extraction process is going to be very, VERY SLOW!
Centrifugal Juicer: very, VERY fast extraction rate and the large screen makes the juicing of pulpy fruit easy and fast. However extremely pulpy (ie bananas) and very soft fruits would do much better by foregoing the juice/pulp separation process and simply tossing them into a blender.

Now about the Breville BJE510XL specifically: For me its about the best centrifugal juicer out there. Motor is very powerful and the variable speed feature makes Breville BJE510XL more useful over a wider range of fruits/veggies, however really soft fruits such as raspberries, strawberries etc. and some small fruits like blueberries do not do well in this Breville BJE510XL at any speed as even the slowest speed is so violent that they too quickly slide over the top of the screen before much juice can be extracted from Breville BJE510XL. Expect then for the pulp of many soft fruits and vegetables (such as tomatoes) to still contain some juice after processing. I would actually suggest using Breville BJE510XL for the berries and then adding it to the extracted juices separately... its both more economical and healthier for you that way. Leafy greens (including wheatgrass) are another problem item for any centrifugal Breville BJE510XL... they will not juice properly so don't even bother trying... leafy greens is what the masticating Breville BJE510XL truly excel at. Finally, though citrus fruits will juice in the Breville BJE510XL, you will soon get tired of peeling them as you canNOT juice them with the peel still on because the citrus oils extracted from the peels don't taste very good at all. Once you've purchased a good Breville BJE510XL you'll understand why this really is the only way to juice any citrus fruits. The Breville BJE510XL is great for whole kiwi, apples, carrots, celery, broccoli stalks, asparagus, radishes, beets, kohlrabi, cabbage heads (outer leaves removed and head sliced to under 3"), cucumbers, squash, grapes, mangoes, peaches, and plums (with pits/seed removed of course), pears, all melons, papaya, etc... even tomatoes and strawberries (though don't expect the pulp to be very dry)... and there is no need to peel many of Breville BJE510XL processing (just the melons), you just drop them in the large 3" chute. The juicing process Breville BJE510XL is really fast and the clean-up is a snap... you just rinse out 3 parts and brush the screen. The fit/finish, materials used and quality in general are all excellent and the design intelligent.

The downsides of the Breville BJE510XL are: even at the slowest speed it is still quite fast and soft fruits/vegetables can literally be thrown back out through that large 3" diameter feed chute if you are not fast enough to cover with the plunger or your hand... yes, Breville BJE510XL can get real messy, like as in throwing bits of food/juice up and out onto kitchen walls, etc. so Breville BJE510XL is a bit of a learning curve when juicing the soft items. We've owned this Breville BJE510XL for the last 3 months and have used Breville BJE510XL everyday... the blades have dulled a little since it was new, which is to be expected but still all-in-all remain plenty sharp enough to get the job done... and the lower clear plastic bowl has slightly discolored from all the carrots but again it is to be expected and is only very, very slight.

Bottomline here... we have been very please with this Breville BJE510XL and can highly recommend Breville BJE510XL for juicing most fruits and vegetables with the notable exceptions being leafy greens (get a masticating juicer just for juicing those items) and citrus fruit (a citrus juicer would be far more convenient) and finally don't be expecting soft items to be 100% fully extracted.

A great appliance for what it is... a centrifugal juicer!!!, June 26, 2009
By
Monomer (USA) - See all my reviews

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)

well built Breville BJE510XL

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; Juicing carrots left no stains and washing with paper towel and few drops of mild detergent took about 3 minutes for acrylic parts and 5 minutes for the basket with help of soft brush in Breville BJE510XL. Locking bar is solid metal with safety - motor will not start if bar is not raised to lock position to prevent any accidental startup. Speed dial has solid feel and digital info display is very cool looking. After choosing speed the power requirement is automatically adjusting according to load. Breville BJE510XL is slightly heavy yet within a reason. Cutter assembly has simple yet solid lock and is easy to remove - no more pulling apart stuck cutter basket and motor base wondering when you are finally going to break it. Pulp from veggies comes out with little moisture and not dripping wet, so efficiency appears to be quite good. Amazon shipping Breville BJE510XL came in double carton and manufacturer also uses very thick padding therefore no problem with shipping and no damage of any kind. My cheap and easy-to-use Juiceman's motor burnt out after a year, at which point it would have been more expensive to repair than replace. My Champion still works after 15 years and is not difficult to clean, but is messy to use, leaving drips all over the countertop or whatever I line it with. I've also tried the Green Star and Green Power Juicers, which make perfect juice with dry pulp, but take a long time to clean and assemble. The Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900 is the second-down from the top of the line of the four Breville juicers (only the Elite is better), but after a month of use of about every-other-day use, I find no need to upgrade.

Here's why I like this Breville BJE510XL so much for my typical juice of carrot, kale, celery and apple and/or pear:

*Easy to set-up: It takes only seconds to set up this Breville BJE510XL. The juicer itself has only 3 pieces to snap into place, plus there's the acrylic pitcher, pulp basket, and pusher. The pieces fit perfectly like a jigsaw puzzle, which brings me to the second reason I like it:

*Not messy: The Breville BJE510XL ends up in the pitcher, the pulp goes to the pulp basket, plus some residual of each ends up in the Breville BJE510XL to be cleaned. My Champion Juicer OTOH required me to find containers around the house that would fit, and still some would drip out. I would have to place a baking sheet or towel under it to contain the mess.

*Quick vegetable and fruit prep: I can fit several carrots at once into the 3" diameter shoot, plus whole pears and/or apples. I don't have to do as much cutting ahead of time as I did with other juicers with a narrower shoot. You must be careful though to use the pusher and not your hand.

*Quick clean up: Those 6 pieces mentioned above are all I have to clean. I can clean my Breville BJE510XL in just a few minutes, once I figured out a good way to clean the filtration basket--by far the most challenging part to clean. This basket was frustrating to clean at first, particularly since my Breville BJE510XL did not come with the brush it was supposed to (and customer service did not respond to my request to obtain a brush). I tried various brushes, but what works best is an all purpose nylon scouring pad from Trader Joe's which comes in packages of 4 for $2.59. The secret to quick clean up is to begin cleaning as soon as you've finished juicing, although you do have a few minutes to drink your juice first. Rinse off the filtration basket and vigorously scrub half of each of the three sections at a time with the nylon scrubber, rinsing each half section before moving on to the next. This should remove 90 to 90% of the pulp debris. Repeat or spot clean to remove the rest. I can clean the whole basket in less than a minute. The other parts are quick and straightforward to clean, although you have to be careful to clean under the rim of the acrylic part that the basket sits in.

*Helpful design features: The Breville BJE510XL has a smaller footprint than the Champion and Greenstar Juicers; a sleek, modern look that looks good in kitchens; pieces that fit together well (as mentioned), and even the plug is in the shape of a ring so one can easily pull it out of the socket without yanking on the cord.

*Doesn't stain. Although it has some acrylic parts, so far, with immediate cleaning after use, there have been no stains.

A few compromises. No juicer is perfect. This Breville BJE510XL is average in several areas. You can have a juicer that is above average in these areas (Green Star and Green Power), but you will be spending a lot more time in assembly, disassembly and cleaning. Having used the Green Star and Green Power, I would rather have the quick and easy juicer and sacrifice a small amount of yield.

*Noise - This Breville BJE510XL is as loud as your average kitchen appliance like a food processor or blender. The Green Star or Green Power are whisper quiet. It is not as loud as my Blendtec blender which requires me to wear ear phones.

*Yield - The pulp in this Breville BJE510XL is neither very wet nor very dry--it's average. For sawdust-dry pulp and more yield, the Green Star, Green Power and the $2,000 difficult-to-clean Norwalk exceed the Breville.

*Versatility - The Breville BJE510XL is strictly a juicer. If you're a raw foodist who is interested in making frozen banana "ice cream" and "not tuna" pate', you might prefer the Champion, Green Star or Green Power. However, I have found you can make these items in the food processor, so I'd rather have the dedicated easy juicer. Banana "ice cream" takes about 5 minutes in the food processor, as opposed to about 30 seconds in the Champion juicer.

The bottom line is that the right juicer for you is the one that can get used. With quick and easy food prep, assembly, disassembly, and cleaning, at my house, this IS the juicer that gets used.

By Groovy Vegan (USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04)
This review is from: Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor (Kitchen)
